"Gahi Ka'g Ulo" (You're Hard Headed), a short film written and directed by Conviron Altatis is one of the films to be screened at the Sweet As Film Festival 2016 on Aug. 26 in Quebec, Canada. The filmmaker is one of the students of the Brillante Mendoza Film Workshop 2016.
Running 25 minutes and 22 seconds, "Gahi Ka'g Ulo" (You're Hard Headed) is about two heterosexual brothers coming into terms with their brother who came out as gay after the death of their parents. It stars Altatis himself along with Mico Angeles and Renz Termulo.
Both Angeles and Altatis play two characters in the short film. The former plays a heterosexual man and a transgender while the latter plays homosexual men, a straight acting one and a transgender.
The soundtrack of the short film of the same name features the vocals of Altatis and Angeles. It was recorded right before the film was shot in Bulacan, Philippines.
Aside from "Gahi Ka'g Ulo" (You're Hard Headed), Altatis's short film "Boys' Toys" will also be screened at the Sweet As Film Festival 2016 both in the non-competition category. "Boys' Toys" stars Elijah Filamor, Lloyd Ara, Mica Jaotegan and Lito Capina, who were Altatis's classmates in the Brillante Mendoza Film Workshop 2016.
During the Brillante Mendoza Film Workshop 2016 culminating program on April 28, Altatis's thesis film "Strawberry Girl" lead actress Rona Mae Lallana won the Best Actress award. The Best Actor award was given to Filamor, the lead actor of "Idolo" by Best Director awardee Daniel Palacio.
Recently, Brillante Mendoza made his return to the Cannes Film Festival 2016 with his film "Ma'Rosa," which also starred his students Jomari Angeles and John Paul Duray. The film made Jaclyn Jose, who played the title character, the first Southeast Asian actress to win the Best Actress award from the Cannes Film Festival.
