The upcoming Apple Watch 2 is going to feature the One Glass Solution (OGS) display technology as opposed to the Glass on Glass (G/G) solution currently used on the original smartwatch. This is a new, thinner technology that will be behind its touchscreen OLED display to allegedly conserve some internal space for a slightly larger battery and to make the device thinner than the original.
According to BGR, TPK Holding, which is the touch panel maker and Apple's component supplier, made comments that confirm the new technology in the upcoming Apple Watch 2. The Taiwanese publication confirmed the information to TPK itself. TPK will utilize just one piece of glass instead of two pieces of glass that the current Apple Watch used. This will make the Apple Watch 2 slightly less heavy that the original, but TPK has encountered some production issues.
TPK indicated that the new OGS touch panels had unexpected technical issues in the production, as Apple Insider reported. This led to lower yield rates than expected for the new Apple Watch 2 touchscreen display. The touch panel iPhone orders continued to decrease, making the second quarter's large loss. This prompted the company Apple to change the display technology from G/G to OGS, TPK said. This change in technology involved unexpected technological difficulties.
Rumours from last month suggest that the so-called Apple Watch 2 will look exactly the same on the exterior. The company plans to change the OLED display on the current smartwatch with Micro LED technology to help improve the battery life and to provide a richer color gamut with higher display resolutions. The Micro LED will make the bulky casing more slender and elegant than the original.
Other rumors suggest that Apple Watch 2 will feature a better screen for outdoor visibility, a custom S2 processor, a high-definition FaceTime camera, and an integrated GPS chip for fitness tracking as well as LTE cellular data for cellular connectivity. It will have a launch at an Apple special event in September from the partners in Apple's supply chain together with the unveiling of iPhone 7, which will likely take place in early September.
