Fresh from scoring a majority win over Leo Santa Cruz in the WBA featherweight bout last Saturday, Carl Frampton has welcomes the possibility of slugging it out with the Mexican one more time.
Frampton exchanged bombs with Santa Cruz throughout the course of their 12-round title fight at the Barclays center, but in the end, he was the one who eked out a 114-114, 116-112 and 117-111 majority decision win to become a two-division world champ.
Former WBO featherweight champ Barry McGuigan couldn't help but to cry after seeing his war defy all odds by beating the universally recognized best featherweight in the world.
"We worked on the single shot counters, he [Frampton] hurt him several times with right hooks around the side. He did get a bit right hand happy as the fight went on but I thought it was a beautiful performance," McGuigan continued. "He stood and fought with Santa Cruz, and Santa Cruz doesn't like to be pushed back."
"What I said at the beginning was, he's got to fight him when he [Santa Cruz] wants to box and box him when he wants to fight and I thought he carried it out to a tee.
"It was an amazing fight, probably one of the fights of the year and I'm just thrilled because I knew he could do it. He's a super kid, he's a great fighter, and he's an underrated puncher. He's the whole shebang, I promise you.
Although a potential showdown with Lee Selby has entered the picture as well, Frampton is aware that a second chapter of his rivalry with Santa Cruz is inevitable.
As for Santa Cruz, he wants nothing but another shot at the Irishman.
"It was a pretty tough fight but now I want a rematch. I don't care where," Santa Cruz told Boxing News Online. "He's a great champion and he's got a very difficult style. It's hard to forget your first loss but I will go back to the gym and get a rematch."
