Snoop Dogg is expanding his horizons as he joins MTV's pot comedy "Mary + Jane." His participation will not be limited to music as he will also be one of the show's executive producers.
During MTV's panel of "Mary + Jane," at the Television Critics Association's (TCA) press tour, representatives for the show revealed a video introduction showing Snoop Dogg. The rapper wrote and performed the series' theme song, which according to the cannabis-based media company Merry Jane, is one of the exciting theme songs they have ever heard of.
Snoop Dogg is also joining the pool of executive producers, including "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Made of Honor" executive producers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont; Marcus Blakely; Jill McElroy and Ted Chung.
"He does not play himself," Deadline quoted Kaplan as saying. "He's like a Snoop Fairy." Snoop Dogg was absent during the panel, but "Mary + Jane" executive producers Kaplan and Elfont assured that the rapper's fans are going to see him in Season 1. The showrunners did not specify on which episode, Snoop Dogg will be appearing.
Aside from the "Young, Wild & Free" rapper, celebrity guest stars such as Seth Green, Missi Pyle, Leonard Roberts and Andy Daly are also going to be the show's special guests during Season 1. The executive producers opened up that it was a bit challenging to invite huge stars in the show since Scout Durwood and Jessica Rothe are just new.
The "Mary + Jane" showrunners are hoping that other "weed-friendly" and "comedy-friendly" celebrities could come and join the new MTV comedy show. Snoop Dogg, a self-confessed weed fanatic has invested in several ventures focusing on medical marijuana, sales, delivery and branded marijuana edibles.
The new show is a single camera, half-hour comedy that follows the story of two "ganjapreneurs" as they engage in an all-female weed delivery service in Los Angeles. The show marks the first time for a cannabis-based media company to collaborate with a major television cable network such as MTV.
"Mary + Jane" is set to be released on Sept. 5 on MTV. Check out its first official trailer.
