A cyclist suffered burns on his upper right thigh after his iPhone 6 exploded when he fell from his bike. Reports said that the incident left the victim needing skin grafts.
Gareth Clear, the cyclist, was on Manly Dam in Australia, riding his bike and fell on his iPhone 6. Just a few seconds later, he noticed smoke and felt searing heat then heard an explosion. His phone ignited and melted through his shorts, burning that caused him a thrid degree burn on his upper right thigh, Cycling Today reported.
Because of the severe burn, the cyclist has to undergo skin graft surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital. Clear, who is a management consultant and originally came from Winchester in Hampshire but has been in Australia for six years said, that the incident is random and the iPhone did hit the ground which made it explode. "It was a one in one million chance I hit a part of the phone which pierced the lithium battery and it exploded," he added.
The lithium form the battery spewed out like black lava from the side of the phone and the metal started to bend. He added that his leg was completely black after the "snap-explotion."
Fortunately, the cyclist had a bottle of water and was able to pour the liquid onto the burns. He took the hot phone off using two bits of woods and pushed his bicycle two kilometers back. He was scared and worried that the chemical might get into his bloodstream, as reported by Mirror Online.
The cyclist received treatments from Manly General and Royal North Shore Burns Hospital. He stayed in the hospital for 24 hours and now recovering at the home of a friend. He has to stay home for the rest of the week with a machine hooked up to prevent infection and needs weeks of rest to recover.
The cyclist also stated that this is the first time it happened to him after owning a mobile phone for the past 18 years. Mirror Online tried to contact Apple for a comment. However, Clear said that Apple told him that they would conduct an investigation regarding the incident.
