South Korean tech giant Samsung is considering making the edge display the identity of its Galaxy S smartphone lineup, according to Samsung Mobile President Dong-jin Koh.
Given the hint that the company president dropped, there is a chance that Samsung would no longer manufacture flat smartphones, pointed out Techradar. However, before the tech giant adopts that as the only version of its flagship phone, Dong-jin said it needs to provide various user experiences through the software and features of the Edge screen.
The first version of the edge screen was the Galaxy S6 Edge released in 2015. It was followed by the Galaxy S7 edge which was also a very popular model that the South Korean phonemaker failed to meet demand due to the company’s inabililty to sort some issue with the production of the curved edge screen, noted Slashgear.
The Note 7 that Samsung launched likely had only one version, which is the curved screen, the company’s trial balloon if buyers would go all the way for that kinds of screen. The company veered towards the edge screen because sales of the Galaxy $7 Edge was significantly higher than the standard models with flat screens.
But a market observer believes Samsung would not just phase out suddenly the flat screen models for its Galaxy S line. However, “if the market response is positive with the Note 7, it would surely serve as a cue for Samsung to focus only on the Edge model,” the watcher said.
Dong-in foresees Samsung’s release of bendable gadgets would have a ripple effect on the smartphone industry.
