Serena Williams missed her chance to win at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. After a shocking loss to Elina Svitolina, the world's number one tennis player lost her chance to become the first American tennis player to win a pair of singles gold.
The third round in Tuesday's match was a real shocker as Elina from Ukraine took over the game from Serena with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Williams accepted that she had problems playing the game strategically against the highest ranked Ukraine player who hardly missed a stroke.
The problem, however, began for Williams when she fell behind 2-1 with a wrong strike that missed overhead into the net. Towards the end of the game, Svitolina had won 63 points that came through William's 17 forced errors and 37 unforced errors.
On being asked about her reactions after the loss, Williams said, "The Better player won." However, she ignored the media after the games. Instead, she spoke to a U.S. tennis Association spokesman whom she gave a brief interview. Her recorded audio was later shared with the reporters.
The 22-grand slam title winner had won golds in both singles and doubles at the 2012 London Olympics. As for the women's doubles, she and her sister Venus lost the game as well. At the Rio Olympics so far, four tennis events are under way, but mixed doubles has yet to start. All number one seeds are gone, including Serbian player Novak Dkovic in the men's singles, ESPN reported.
No tennis player has been successful in winning two gold medals in the history of Olympic tennis for singles. Only the following weeks will reveal whether Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray stands a chance. Both are now into the third round.
Nadal could not play the French Open due to an injured left wrist, and he wasn't even sure if he could actually compete in the Olympics. However, everything has been going fine for the 2008 Beijing Olympic title and owner of an sterling 14 Grand Slam championships, as he beat Italy's Andreas Seppi with 6-3, 6-3.
As for Williams, who lost at the Olympics this year, won the Wimbledon Championships, last month. Although she qualified for the final of this year's French Open and Australian Open, she lost to Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerner, respectively, NBC Olympics reported.
