Mojang has confirmed that Minecraft will finally arrive for the Oculus Rift VR headset after a brief delay when it was supposed to be launched with the Windows 10 Edition Beta version.
Oculus Rift VR headset owners will be able to play the world's favorite sandbox game in virtual reality after several months of the developers modifying Minecraft to work seamlessly with the device. There are already unofficial Minecraft VR mods out in the open but they do not have official support for the headsets.
Minecraft VR version will be a bit different than the normal edition as there have been some changes with how the camera works in the game. These changes are made in order not to induce nauseating feeling for VR headset users.
Mojang's Tommaso Checchi confimed that the Minecraft VR version release date will be set next week, PC Magazine has learned. Unfortunately, Mojang has not given the exact date as to when it will be finally rolled out.
Those who already own the Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will get the Oculus Rift version for free. They simply have to login their Mojang account and click the redeem button to get it free of charge.
Of course, users will still have to own an Oculus Rift to experience the VR Minecraft version. Oculus Rift VR headset costs around $599 without the cost needed to build a powerful rig to run VR games, TechCrunch reported.
Fortunately for those who are looking to buy an Oculus Rift headset, the company is now shipping the device for as early as two days from ordering. Oculus recently announced that their backlogs of pre-orders in the past few months have been cleared and that new customers who purchase will get them in less than a week depending on where they live.
Minecraft is still selling like hotcakes and the new VR version could help drive up the sales even more including for the Oculus Rift headsets themselves. There is no word of an HTC Vive VR version for Minecraft but Oculus Rift games can already be played through a third-party app for HTC's headset.
