“Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Johnny Depp just made a $7 million donation to charity. However, the money would be coursed through former wife Amber Heard who said on Thursday she would donate the amount she got from the divorce settlement to charity.
The charitable institutions that Heard chose are the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, reported Mashable. In making the donation, Heard said she hopes to “help those less able to defend themselves.”
The two organizations would split the donation in half. Heard picked ACLU because of its advocacy of violence against women and the Children’s Hospital where she was a volunteer the past 10 years. She has witnessed the impact of additional funding on staffing, improved equipment and better medication, and the difference it makes between life and death for a child.
“I know these organizations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future. Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most,” Heard said in a statement.
Heard dropped charges of physical violence against Depp as part of the divorce settlement. The 53-year-old actor had denied hitting Heard during their fight in their Los Angeles apartment.
The decision of Heard to donate the entire amount of the divorce settlement to charity dashed insinuations that the actress is a gold digger and she made up the fights to divorce Depp for his money, pointed out Bustle.
