Twitter has taken its step against terrorism by suspending 235,000 accounts linked to terror group of some sort. The revolutionary step by the social media has brought into highlight how much work needs to be done in order to abolish terrorism.
Barak Obama pointed out the opportunity that the social media is offering to the Islamic State in recruiting people. He personally appealed to the Silicon Valley to be strict in this regard.
Twitter previously suspended 125,000 accounts since mid-2015. These were linked in some way in the process of promoting terrorism and violent threads, Twitter blog mentioned. The blog mentioned that the terror activities around the world increased after that but it is continuing its fight against terrorism.
Since February 2016, 235,000 more accounts are suspended. The daily suspension rate is 80% and it is higher when there is a terror attack. The company has a strong policy that does not allow the terrorism to grow through its platform.
The social media and the micro-blogging giant is working Twitter a terrorism free space and thus it has expanded its team to make sure the reach of the terror groups is limited. Not only the accounts are suspended, the users will not be able to be back on the platform immediately after the suspension takes place.
The company is dealing with the empowerment of women through freedom of speech, New York Times pointed out. However, terrorism is considered to be the most important aspect, by the company. The total number of suspended account since mid of 2015 is 360,000.
On one side when Twitter against terrorism is a big agenda of the company, it has also introduced a new tool for the common users. This will allow users to have more control on over their interactions. The option will allow the user to use a filter that will weed out duplicate and automated message. So when a viewer will be viewing the profile, it will be neater and cleaner than ever.
Twitter is definitely taking a large step by suspending several accounts to stop terrorism. However, loop holes are feared and more action may be required to stop it.
