The first season of this popular anime was aired between July and September 2014, and was telecast on Tokyo MX. Studio Pierrot aired the first episode on July 4, 2014, which was entitled ''Higeki." It means ''Tragedy'' in English. In this episode the viewers could see Ken Kaneki befriending a charismatic woman Rize Kamishiro. Kaneki was unaware of the fact that she is a ghoul and survives on human flesh. She expressed her desire to eat Kaneki, however he survived the attack.
Even though, he is saved by an emergency operation, some of Rize's organs were transplanted into him which made him a half-ghoul.
