The NBA rumors about the Cleveland Cavaliers and their search for a center continue and they might need to take risks if they don't want to trade.
According to Hoops Habit, the defending champions may consider Larry Sanders, a player out of circulation but rumored to be on the comeback trail.
"It isn't known how much Andersen has left in the tank, and Frye is used mainly as a stretch center. So why not give Sanders a shot?" appealed Jamyson Fryerson. "He's only 27 years old, and has missed only two years of action. Sanders also possesses the one thing that the Cavs have lacked within the interior: defense."
As of now, the Cavs' starting center would be Tristan Thompson. He filled the role well against the Golden State Warriors in the Finals, even through their Eastern Conference playoff run when they faced a Toronto Raptors team that had their starting center Jonas Valanciunas injured.
But teams in the East have retooled their center position. The Indiana Pacers acquired Al Jefferson and the Atlanta Hawks signed Dwight Howard. There is also the Boston Celtics who took Al Horford. All three are projected to be playoff teams. Even the NY Knicks with Joakim Noah could be considered as an upgrade.
Along with playoff teams with incumbent centers like the Detroit Pistons (Andre Drummond) Miami Heat (Hassan Whiteside) and the aforementioned Raptors, the Cavs may not be able to wing it with just Tristan Thompson defending the paint.
Is Sanders worth the risk (and the roster spot)? This is a tough question to answer. CBS recalled that the former Milwaukee Bucks center left the league due to issues with anxiety and depression which in turn drove him to cannabis use, violating the league's anti-drug policy.
Some pundits believe that Sanders is not really serious about his return to basketball based on his video introduction that said: "I'm Larry Sanders, I'm a person. I'm a father. I'm an artist. I'm a writer. I'm a painter. I'm a musician. And sometimes I play basketball."
Basketball is Sanders' claim to fame and he may have used a possible comeback to draw attention. However, if Sanders can show that he can focus and is in shape, he may be a bargain for the Cavs.
