Samsung announced the cost of the replacement for the Galaxy Note 7's display. The device uses a 5.7 inch seamless curved Gorilla Glass 5 and has a waterproof feature so it make sense that the broken piece and the repair job is expected to be expensive.
However, it is not expected that it will cost as expensive as $270 since the Apple's iPhone 6S Plus, that has the most expensive iPhone screen only goes for $150. Even HTC offers a free repair on a broken screen within a year after buying through its Uh Oh Program, The Verge reported.
A Galaxy Note 7 as well as the S7 Edge's Gorilla Glass 5 must be really expensive. The complexity of the repair to keep the device's waterproofing intact makes it even more expensive. However, this could be a tactic from Samsung to encourage its consumers to take advantage of their $129 Protection Plus plan. The protection plan covers two cases of accidental damage within the two years of purchase.
On the other hand, while Gorilla Glass 5 is designed to survive falls and known to be tougher than the first versions, reports say that the new display is more prone to scratches. Corning denied such problem and said that nothing is wrong with its defenses, as reported by BGR.
A durability test video from TechRax showed how tough the Gorilla Glass 5 is using the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. He scratched the front side of the phone using a knife and no scratch was made. However, when he hit the back side of the phone using the same knife, the phone got visible damages.
TechRax even hit the front side of the phone with a 2.5 pound hammer and got no damages on the first light hammer drops. The Gorilla Glass 5 even survived heavier pounding of hammer, no cracks nor scratches. That is enough tests to determine that the glass is really durable.
The video showed that the Gorilla Glass 5 can really survive massive hitting before it brakes and users should not be worried if they accidentally dropped their Galaxy Note 7 (on a normal height). However the back side of the phone is not as durable as the front side. So to sum it up, do not drop the phone.
