With director Ryoo Seung-Wan at the helm, filming for "Battleship Island" began on June 17 and will most likely take six to seven months to wrap up. The upcoming historical film has been getting attention for both its A-list cast and the director's previous blockbuster films, including "Veteran" in 2015 and "The Berlin File" in 2013.
"I am happy that the first take went as smoothly as possible," director Ryoo told Han Cinema. "The filming will be tough as it progresses. I believe we will do a great job."
"Battleship Island" is set during the Japanese colonial era (1910-1945). It aims to highlight the inhumane conditions, under which more than 800 Korean workers worked in the coal mines on Gunkanjima, a remote island lying about 15 kilometers from the city of Nagasaki, Southern Japan.
"The Wailing" actor Hwang Jung Min will play the role of a hotel bandmaster, Lee Kang Ok, who thought he was being sent to Japan but instead was scammed and sent to the island. "Descendants of the Sun" actor Song Joong-Ki will play a soldier from the Korean Independence Army, Park Moo Young, who infiltrates the island to rescue an imperative figure of the independence movement against imperial Japan.
So, who is best known for his leading role in Jang Hoon's "Rought Cut" in 2008, takes on the role of Gyeongsong's best fighter, Choi Chil-Sung, who brought peace to the entire Jongno district. Singer-turned-actress Lee Jung Hyun has been cast as Mal Nyun, who was kept to serve as sex slaves to men in the Japanese military.
"Now that Korea and China share the scars from World War II, it is very likely that the movie will be released on the same day, both in Korea and China," an official from film distributor, CJ E&M, told Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily, as cited by The Kpop Herald.
