A day after the nude photos of “Ghostbusters” actress Leslie Jones was leaked online, Homeland Security stepped in to investigate the hacking incident.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency under the Department of Homeland Security, said its New York office is probing the hack. However, beyond announcing its investigation the ICE did not provide more details of its probe.
ICE said no further details of the case would currently be available to protect the integrity of the case, BBC reported.
In the past, it was the FBI which investigated similar incidents, such as the Fappening involving Jennifer Lawrence’s nude photos in 2014 and another one in 2011 involving Scarlett Johansson, pointed out LA Times.
After the hacked website was taken online, it has not been restored as of Thursday afternoon. Besides the nude photos of the comedian stolen either from her smartphone or iCloud account, also leaked were scanned copies of her passport and driver’s license.
Celebrities such as Katy Perry, Lena Dunham, Ellen DeGeneres, Bette Middler and Monica Lewinski tweeted their support for Jones. Following the racist tweets that Jones has been receiving prior to the cyberattack, Twitter announced a new quality filter designed to allow members to deal with abusive posts and trolls more easily.
