SBS' mega-hit series "Doctors," also known as "Doctor Crush" aired its finale on Aug. 23, Tuesday. The show starring Kim Rae-won (Hong Ji-hong), Park Shin-hye (Yoo Hye-jung), Yoon Kyun-sang (Jung Yoon-do), and Lee Sung-kyung (Jin Seo-woo) ended with record high ratings. Meanwhile, fans are looking forward to being treated to a sequel or Season 2. Will the cast return for a follow-up season? Read on for the details.
"Doctors" premiered on June 20, Monday and soon became a fan-favourite. "Doctors" revolved around Hye-jung's journey of finding a truth about her grandmother's death and bring justice to her family. Amid her quest, she fell in love with her mentor Ji-hong, who changed her life.
The show has not been officially renewed yet. The network is yet to make an official announcement whether there will be a "Doctors" Season 2 or not, leaving room for speculations. According to Bitbag, if the show returns it is expected to explore "several unresolved issues" that Hye-jung must deal with. The website speculates that the show must focus on other characters including Kang Soom Young-gook, See-woo and more.
"Doctors" consistently received high ratings. According to Soompi, rating research company Neilsen Korea revealed that "Doctor Crush" ended with 20.2 percent nationwide ratings. In addition, the final scene that featured the series' stars Park Shin-hye and Kim Rae-won earned 27.8 ratings. The show was often compared to South Korea's most watched Hallyu drama "Descendants of the Sun" (DoTS).
Despite record-breaking ratings, there is no news about the series' renewal. Several media outlets suggest that there is little chance of "Doctors" to return for Season 2. Movie News Guide states that usually, K-dramas do not follow sequels. So it is highly unlikely for Kim Rae-won (Hong Ji-hong), Park Shin-hye (Yoo Hye-jung) cast to return for "Doctors" Season 2.
In the meantime, star Park Shin-hye bid goodbye to "Doctors" with a message and seven behind-the-scene photos, according to Soompi.
"Just like the way Hye Jung grew in the drama, it was a time for me to grow as well. Those four months were so precious, thankful, and happy; so I wanted to open my heart and show how much it hurts and how I don't want to say goodbye," the actress said.
