As the official release of Shingeki no Kyojin chapter 85 draws near, rumors are already flying around about the content of the popular manga series' upcoming installment.
After five years of wait, the Shiganshina trio of Eren, Mikasa and Armin returned to their titan-ravaged town, trying to claw their way back to Yeager's old residence where the secret of the titan and the world lies underneath.
If you have already guessed what chapter 85 will all about, then yes, this month's release is expected to focus entirely on the Survey Corps' search of Dr. Yeager's basement and probably the discovery of the biggest mystery in the series.
To hype things up, let's speculate what really is in the basement, which is basically the Holy Grail in the Shingeki no Kyojin universe.
As mentioned already in the previous chapters, Dr. Grisha Yeager played as the catalyst of every event that happened in the series. And it's becoming a lot clearer now that Eren's 'father' knows a great deal of things about the true nature of the titan, the war between Warriors and Soldiers of the Wall and even the world's history itself.
The Origin of the Titan - Other than being known as a renowned doctor who saved the citizens of the wall from a plague-liked virus years before the start of the story, Dr. Yeager was a titan shifter to start with.
In a conversation with Keith Shadis in chapter 71, Eren learned that it was the former Survey Corps commander who found his father outside the walls lying unconsciously, but surprisingly unharmed despite being well within titan territory.
As one of the first titan shifters introduced in the story in chronological order, it's safe to assume that he knows the origin and nature of the titan. Perhaps, the basement served as his laboratory to study the makeup of the titan and concoct an antidote to reverse titans back to its human form.
History of the World - This is probably the most fascinating plot in the Shingeki no Kyojin universe. What really is the true history of the world before the first Reiss King wiped out the memories of his subjects, excluding the Oriental and the Ackerman.
Dr. Yeager might have known something about the history of the world based on his frequent visitation at Mikasa's residence. Again, the Orientals and Ackerman are the only races not affected by the Reiss King's memory manipulation, and Mikasa as a mixed-breed of both races, was the key to Dr. Yeager's research.
The True Identity of Eren Yeager - Now this gets more and more mindboggling. Aside from being the son of Dr. Yeager and a titan shifter, it's surprising that there's very little information about Eren. Who really is he and why Dr. Yeager considers him a perfect bearer of the coordinator?
Moreover, Eren's identity gets murkier after his encounter with Zeke 'Ape Titan,' who found the young Yeager a lot different from Grisha. The warchief even went on to say that they both share the role as the victim of Dr. Yeager and promised to save him at some other time.
Is he really the biological son of Dr. Yeager or Eren is someone from the future? If he really is a man from the future, then it would explain the title of the first chapter "To me, 2000 years from now."
