"Game of Thrones" actress Natalie Dormer joins Mel Gibson and Sean Penn in the film adaptation of "The Professor and the Madman." Farhad Safinia is the director and wrote Gibson's produced and directed "Apocalypto."
Dormer will play a widow whose husband was killed by insane asylum inmate and dictionary contributor Dr. W.C. Minor (Penn) and whose family he wants to help. After Minor offers to help her family, a complicated romance between the two of them arises to add a bit of tension in "The Professor and the Madman," as Vulture reported.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson will play Professor James Murray in "The Professor and the Madman." His character began an extensive project of compiling the dictionary in 1857 and led the overseeing committee. This is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. Minor submitted more than 10,000 entries when he was an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.
"The Professor and the Madman" is Icon Productions' adaptation of Simon Winchester's best-seller novel about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. It revolves around the two men who attempted to create the dictionary. The script was originally written by Todd Komarnicki and John Boorman with Safinia rewriting.
Voltage is repping the international rights and will be selling "The Professor and the Madman" at the Toronto International Film Festival. Gibson is the producer with Icon's Bruce Davey. The principal photography begins in late September in Europe.
Dormer just played as Queen Margaery Tyrell on the recently-ended "Game of Thrones" Season 6. She will soon start production on the indie psychological revenge thriller "In Darkness." She also co-wrote with the film's director Anthony Bryne. Her co-stars in the said film include Emily Ratajkowski, Stacy Martin, and Ed Skrein. She is represented by Untitled Entertainment, UTA, United Agents, and Jackoway Tyerman.
Gibson is repped by Ric Nicita. He is currently the director of the World War II action-drama film "Hacksaw Ridge," starring Andrew Garfield. Penn is represented by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein. He directed drama film "The Last Face," starring Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem. Safinia is repped by WME. She created the Starz series "Boss," starring Kelsey Grammer.
