Stan Wawrinka will attempt to get past Juan Martin del Potro when the two meet in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday.
Third seed Wawrinka received a boost in the last-eight stage of the US Open after defeating Ukrainian Illya Marchenko in four sets 6-4 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3. Wawrinka was broken then lost a tiebreaker in the third set followed by a break early in the fourth set, but proceeded to win the next four games to regain control and advanced into the quarterfinal round.
Wawrinka faces another tough opponent in Del Potro, who defeated Wawrinka at Wimbledon this year.
Coming off a Silver Medal finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Del Potro continues his impressive run in New York aided by Dominic Thiem's unfortunate withdrawal from the tournament due to a knee problem. Del Potro won the first set 6-3 and was up a break in the second before Thiem, who showed promising performances earlier this year, decided to retire from the game.
Del Potro leads Wawrinka by 4-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head career singles matchup, winning all four of their last four meetings, most recently at Wimbledon, where the 27-year-old Argentine upset Wawrinka in the early rounds of the tournament.
Heading into his seventh career match against Wawrinka, Del Potro knows he is the underdog, but the world No. 142 will hope to channel the support from the crowd when he faces the two-time major titlist.
"[Wawrinka] will be the favorite to win in that match," del Potro said, reports ESPN. "But anything can happen in this event for me. I got the power from the crowd in every match."
The winner between Wawrinka and Del Potro could face Kei Nishikori or Andy Murray in the semifinal round of the US Open. Nishikori defeated Ivo Karlovic in straight sets 6-3 6-4 7-6(4), while Murray had a walk in the park against Grigor Dimitrov 6-1 6-2 6-2.
