Bad news for some fans Sherlock Season 4 might be the last one they make because of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's busy schedule with their films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cumberbatch surprised the world when he was casted as Marvel's Dr. Strange which will be shown this November. Freeman also played a role in the recent Captain America: Civil War film and he is expected to show up in subsequent MCU films as well.
Sherlock Season 4 has officially been revealed by the showrunners and has set an air date for January 2017 but no exact day has been announced, Headlines & Global News has learned. Mark Gattis, co-creator and actor who plays Mycroft Holmes, said that it may be the best season yet that they have done.
Moriarty was seen to be the antagonist once again but the drug-induced Holmes may have proven in the last special that it might not be the case at all. The antagonist was killed in Season 2 and might not be resurrected at all.
Toby Jones might be playing the new Sherlock season's villain and fans speculate that it could be Culverton Smith who appeared on "The Adventure of the Drying Detective" and is considered by some to be the most heinous of all. The showrunners still say that Moriarty will not be eliminated as a villain but the statement could be misinterpreted.
Sherlock Executive Producer Steven Moffat said in a statement that Season 4 could be the last one because of several circumstances and roadblocks, The BitBag reported. Cumberbatch and Freeman's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could also be to blame.
Dr. Strange will reportedly play a large role in the MCU as well as Freeman's character. With movies lined up, it would be hard for both actors to still shoot Sherlock episodes in between.
Updates on the Sherlock Season 4 air date and plot can be expected soon as the end of 2016 nears. The final date could be revealed before January 2017 and it could also be on the first week the same as the previous season.
