Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert has been in hot water in the last month, and the team is now looking at dousing the fire in the wake of recent events that may affect the team's title defense this season.
The 6-foot-5 guard entering his seventh year in the league was recently arrested in Fayette County, Georgia over suspicions of driving under the influence of drugs, according to USA Today. It was later discovered that he also had a marijuana stash inside his car.
Shumpert was driving a rented Audi A3, which was pulled over by a sheriff deputy when he detected a strong smell that resembled burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. He later failed sobriety tests as the arresting officer noticed body tremors and unusual movements during the said tests.
The recent events - combined with a significant performance drop since signing a contract extension - made Shumpert fall out of favor with the Cavaliers management. His current contract signed in July 9, 2015 will keep him on the books until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2019.
Sources privy to the situation has said that the management isn't willing to have Shumpert's arrest affect the team's chemistry just two weeks away from the start of training camp.
Among the teams rumored to take in Shumpert included the Philadelphia 76ers, which is also in the middle of a house cleaning following a disastrous spell in the last three seasons.
Names being floated include big men Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor - the third pick in the 2015 draft.
However, Noel is the favored name, especially with the team looking for a mobile big man that will give them an upgrade for Kevin Love, who is in another whirlwind of trade rumors heading into the season.
The 17th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Shumpert was acquired by the Cavaliers from the New York Knicks in a three-team trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder that also included Josh Smith.
