Augmented reality technology has started to pick up after Niantic's Pokemon GO success but the big gun would be the Microsoft HoloLens and developers managed to create a prototype for an "Yu-Gi-Oh" AR game.
Yu-Gi-Oh was originally a mange series that eventually turned into a worldwide phenomenon when an animated series was spawned along with the millions of cards it sold worldwide. The premise of the manga or anime was about a card game where the monsters pop out from the cards AR style.
There were already several Yu-Gi-Oh video games available but it did not fully emulate the intended experience based on the shows and the manga. Now, the Microsoft HoloLens seems to be the missing key to make that happen.
Gold Team Productions has managed to develop a very rough prototype of a possible Yu-Gi-Oh AR card game with the use of the Microsoft HoloLens, Yahoo News has learned. A YouTube video shows the demonstration of the tracking technology which is credited to Vuforia.
The cards do not even need to be specially printed as long as they are original and clean. In the video, the Blue Eyes White Dragon card makes a rough 3D model of the dragon itself appear and follow the orientation of the card.
Of course, the prototype is not perfect yet and there are a lot of things to improve and add. For one, the 3D models do not move yet and the orientation has a slight delay when the card moves.
The Gold Team Productions developers are currently working on the Yu-Gi-Oh AR Update 3 version which aims to address some of the issues in the current versions, Digital Trends reported. One limitation for the AR game is the Microsoft HoloLens's capability to only track three cards at a time while the game can make use of up to more than five cards per player.
Fans can expect the final version of the Yu-Gi-Oh AR game to arrive several months or years from now at the rate of its development. The Microsoft HoloLens price tag of $3000 is also something to think about for those who really want to experience the game in its full glory.
