Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara revealed a significant change that will take place on Nintendo's next console, NX, as the company considers developing games for the upcoming mysterious console.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ishihara said that "NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a handheld device," then dropping a hint of what will be the company's future in console gaming, "We will make games for the NX."
According to Neurogadget, multiple spin-offs have appeared on consoles in the past, from competitive games like "Pokémon Stadium," to larger RPGs like "Pokémon Colosseum," to the camera-based "Pokémon Snap." As of now, no main-series Pokémon game has ever been released for consoles.
These comments from Pokémon Co. CEO fueled past rumors on the NX, being a hybrid of console and handheld system. In the past reports, Nintendo's NX is rumored to use cartridges, detachable controllers that are attached to both sides of the screen, and can connect to the television by means of a dock.
In other news, Ishihara talked about the wild success of "Pokémon Go," as the Pokémon Co. CEO confirmed previous reports that sales across the entire Pokémon franchise have seen a notable rise since the release of the Augmented Reality-driven application.
In the earlier interview, Ishihara commented that the game was "10 times or even 100 times bigger than we expected." The attractive game title, "Pokémon," has always been a huge franchise through its famous pocket monsters, so the augmented reality spin-off has only increased its popularity.
As a hint on the game's future, Ishihara suggests a player-to-player battles and character trades that could be possibly included on the game's interaction. However, the founder did not confirm any date for the update.
"Battling is a category that we do best at Pokémon, after all," he said. "It's important to really carefully consider any feature that may increase the difficulty and raise the barrier to entry for more casual users."
Nintendo NX is expected to be released in March 2017. The next game in the "Legend of Zelda" series, "Breath of the Wild," is set to launch simultaneously next year on both the NX and Wii U.
