Another speculation made by click bait articles of some entertainment and tech websites about the second season of “Descendants of the Sun” appears to be a dud. It is the rumor that Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo would be parents in season 2.
However, the two lead stars appear unlikely to reprise their roles as Army Captain Yoo Si Jin and Army surgeon Dr. Kang Mo Yeon which made them now the most popular actors in South Korea and China. Song Hye Kyo even won the “Goddess of Asia” title on Sept. 24, proof of how her popularity surged across the Asian continent because of the popular 16-episode drama.
But the only thing that Jung Sung Ho, head of KBS 2TV’s drama department, confirmed is there would be a second season for the popular military-medical drama. “We want to repay viewers with the next ‘Descendants of the Sun.’ We are grateful to viewers, overseas fans, staff, and actors. The drama was more than a domestic syndrome; it established a third wave of Hallyu. KBS will strive to produce a second “Descendants of the Sun” to meet expectations and repay viewers. We plan to launch a 2017 ‘Descendants of the Sun’ project for broadcast in 2017 through negotiations with the cast and production team,” iTechpost quoted Jung Sung Ho.
He admitted there are pressures and challenges that their screenwriters have to undergo to meet the projected 2017 target airing date. Part of the pressure comes from Won Seok, the writer of season 1, refusing to work for season 2 because he feels the story has been told the way he wants it to.
Among the reasons cited by Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo are the conflict in their schedule since he is still shooting “Battleship Island,” while she reportedly wants to give Hollywood a try. However, one website notorious for posting unconfirmed reports hinted she could be pregnant.
Bitbag reported that season 2 would likely focus on the characters played by Kim Ji Won and Jin Goo, promoting them to lead stars from supporting roles. Jin Goo has shared that he has signed up for season 2.
