HTC and Under Armour teamed up to bring a new smartwatch to the table but the so-called "HTC Halfbeak" has been leaked and it does not look ready for a worldwide release yet.
Google's Android Wear has made it possible for seasoned smartphone makers to also develop smartwatches which are slowly becoming more popular these days especially after the Apple Watch was released. Even though the device is not an Android Wear per se, it still drove competition in the smart watch market.
Now, the new smartwatch by Under Armour and HTC has been leaked with photos and additional information. The HTC Halfbeak smartwatch photos were taken from the Chinese social network Weibo and it shows the prototype running Android Wear in test mode, Digital Trends has learned.
HTC's Halfbeak smartwatch prototype runs the Android Wear 5.1.1 version which is already over a year ago. There is no way to determine how old the watch is actually in the photo as some speculate that the product is close to completion and that the photos are just outdated.
The HTC Halfbeak smartwatch is expected to have a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels which is pretty common in the Android Wear smartwatch market today, Android Headlines reported. The photo also shows a heartrate monitor which is also common and it makes sense to include one considering that Under Armour may market the smartwatch as a fitness partner with their apps and equipment.
In terms of the display component, it is now known whether the HTC Halfbeak will be using an AMOLED display or just the traditional LCD screens. Considering that the smartwatch will be used as a fitness tracker outside, the chances of an AMOLED screen is high.
HTC or Under Armour has not commented on the leaks but their silence could mean that the leaked HTC Halfbeak photos are indeed legit. The smartwatch has the logo of the companies but the specs are still a mystery to most people.
Both companies could unveil the HTC Halfbeak probably at CES 2017 if the production is far behind. If the rumors about the Android Wear device being close to the finish line is true, the smartwatch could be unveiled by the end of the year.
