"Super Mario Run" will soon be making its way to the iPhone exclusively, becoming the first Mario title to be released on a smartphone. Apple announced the highly anticipated auto-runner game during its Sept. 7 event with the series' creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself.

At the Apple event, Nintendo teased fans by saying that "Super Mario Run" would be "coming soon." However, shortly after the game's reveal, the Japanese company confirmed via a press release posted on Business Wire that "Super Mario Run" will be available to iPhone and iPad users in December.

The exact date of the title's release is not yet known but if Tim Cook's social media activity is anything to go by, it won't be long before iOS users can set off on an adventure with Mario in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom. The Apple CEO recently tweeted a revealing photo from Japan that suggests that the game is nearing completion.

While users wait for the game's release, they can subscribe to alerts on the App Store's "Super Mario Run" page and receive a notification as soon as the video game drops. The game will be a classic side-scrolling game, in which players have to jump over obstacles and stop on enemies as they collect coins or power-ups.

Upon its release, "Super Mario Run" will be available to download for free, however it will be a basic stripped-down version of the game. Users will have to make a one-time purchase in order to play the full version of the game, Nintendo clarified in an email statement to TouchArcade.

"Super Mario Run" will have three game modes. The first mode will take you back to the classic Mario games as you assume control of the famous plumber and guide him to the end of the flagpole before time runs out.

The second mode is a multiplayer mode called "Toad Rally" which allows players to compete with other players/friends and impress Toads into joining you. The last mode lets players create their own Mushroom Kingdom using Toads and coins earned from the previous two game modes.
