Headlined by Benedict Cumberbatch, the cast of "Doctor Strange" was greeted by thrilled Chinese fans as they visited Shanghai to promote the American superhero film.
The red carpet rolled out for the stars of the film on Sunday, including Hollywood actress Tilda Swinton and director Scott Derrickson. Swinton looked stunning wearing a lavish kimono during the press event. The Daily Mail UK called the 55-year-old actress's style "magical," as she complemented her dress with blonde locks.
Cumberbatch also drew screams from the crowd as he sat down with Swinton and answered questions from the press. Prior to the premiere, selected footages were shown to mainland Chinese media.
According to a reporter from China.org.cn, some clips told the "origin of the character" and provided a sneak-peek to some "mind-blowing action scenes," including one footage shot in Hong Kong.
"It feels somewhat like an upgraded version of 'Matrix' plus 'Inception,' the news website wrote.
For the film's director, however, the objective surpasses this comparison.
"The whole idea going into 'Doctor Strange' was to make a new kind of movie, not just a new kind of superhero movie. To use big-budget visual effects, to do things we haven't seen before. So the audience can expect to have new experiences that they haven't had before in 'Doctor Strange,'" Derrickson was quoted as saying by China.org.cn.
"Doctor Strange," produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney, tells the story of a neurosurgeon who discovered superpowers and the hidden mysteries of alternate dimensions after figuring in an accident. Cumberbatch plays the lead role while Swinton takes the character of Ancient One, Doctor Strange's mentor.
The rest of the cast includes Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor, among others.
After holding its world premiere in Hong Kong, "Doctor Strange" is set for release in North America on Nov. 4.
