The latest offering from Marvel Studios, "Doctor Strange" has gained rave reviews and even before the actual showing of the movie, fans want to see more of the character.
One of the major coups for the film outfit is their acquisition of Benedict Cumberbatch to play the role of Stephen Strange. It was an ideal casting choice and there were doubts on whether they could convince another A-lister to make a superhero movie.
Marvel Studios seems to have made such an impression on the "Sherlock" actor as shown by his statements to Screen Rant.
"There's so much going on in this film [Doctor Strange]. There's such a great story arc, there are so many great challenges for me, as an actor, in every department, from wirework to kung fu to great dialogue scenes with the most incredible cast and great characters. [I] put it on the back-burner that I was playing a superhero... At the premiere, which was the first time I'd seen the film, and - I won't spoil it for you - but there's a moment near the end where I thought, 'Oh yeah, that's it, he's a superhero, he's going to be an Avenger,' so that's really cool."
Yes, Cumberbatch did reveal that his character would join the Avengers-something that was heavily speculated. However, one big surprise is that a sequel may already be in the works. This time from director Scott Derrickson from a Den of Geek interview.
"I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well. [The first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There's so much progress that can be made," Derrickson said.
While he could be hinting at Doctor Strange's forthcoming appearances in the Avengers sequels, it is known that the Russo brothers are tasked to helm those films, not Derrickson. Thus, it is safe to assume that he could be talking about a sequel.
Derrickson referenced "The Dark Knight," perhaps the best superhero sequel in history, as the standard on how he would approach his sequel. He points that the next step after an origin story (which is what "Doctor Strange" is), the sequel should feature a villain who should "go deep."
Which villain is he referring to? That is worth another major reveal.
