"Descendants of the Sun" stars Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo continues to make great wavelengths in the entertainment industry. The Song-Song couple received a Presidential Commendation at this year's South Korean Popular Culture and Arts Award.
On Oct. 27, Thursday, the South Korean government has awarded 30 stars and icons for their work and dedication in the realm of pop culture and arts. Joong-Ki and Hye-Kyo were honored with the highly-coveted Presidential Award for making a significant contribution to the global expansion of the Hallyu wave.
Speaking before a predominantly Korean crowd, as cited by All Kpop, Hye-Kyo expressed deep gratitude to her fans at home and abroad stating that they are the reason why she took home the prestigious award. She added, "I will continue to work hard to win the hearts of drama viewers everywhere."
The "Innocent Man" actor, who is currently busy filming "Battleship Island," stated that he is glad to receive an award on the same stage with Asia's Prince, Lee Kwang Soo, who has been with him since they were rookies. He goes ahead to say that he will continue to work hard to advance the Korean pop culture across the globe.
Besides the Song-Song couple, who has enjoyed immense popularity due to their appearance in the massive pan-Asia drama "Descendants of the Sun," the President's Award have also been given to screenwriter Kim Eun-Sook, BoA, Lee Hyun-Jae, Lee Jung-Sun and Uhm Yong-Soo.
The winners of the Prime Minister's Award include actors Cho Jin-Woong, Yoo Ah-In, Big Bang's leader G-Dragon and SHINee, while boy band BTS aka Bangtan Boys received the Cultural Minister's Award, Soompi reported. The Cultural Merit award, on the other hand, was given to veteran actors Kim Ji-Min and Nam Goong-Won, comedian Nam Bo-Won, trot singer Tae Jin-Ah, musician Bae Sang-Tae and scriptwriter Im Choong.
