Chinese people fighting is good video material, ranging from real wives stripping naked and beating their husbands’ mistresses to middle-aged men trying their Kung Fu skills.
The latest fight to go viral on social media is an angry man hitting a woman in an apartment elevator. The two Langfang City residents’ in Hebei Province fight over smoking was quite physical.
NPR reported that the woman initially asked the male elevator co-passenger to stop smoking in the lift, but the request angered the man and hit the woman. However, she was not intimidated by him and fought back by pushing him out of the elevator while the child who was with the woman cowered behind a bicycle as the two adults fought.
The elevator’s security camera captured the fight which was posted on Chinese social media and went viral on Friday. The clip elicited a lot of comments from Chinese netizens who condemned the violent incident and commented on the state of gender equality in China. The man is still missing, according to Chinese media.
The incident happened on Oct. 12. What stopped the man from further hitting her was when she pulled out her smartphone and tried to record the attacker. That was when the man fled, Shanghaiist reported.
Whether the physical violence comes from their domestic partners or strangers, like the man in the elevator, 25 percent of Chinese women have experienced domestic violence, according to the All China Women’s Federation, a state-run gender organization.
It translates into about 160 million women suffering domestic abuse at some point in their marriage. However, the organization gets only an average of 40,000 to 50,000 complaints annually, showing how many victims prefer to be silent.
