The "Breaking Bad" spinoff and prequel - "Better Call Saul" has been the talk of the town lately and a good part of the reason can be attributed to Chuck McGill. It is now finally known that on the show, the strange condition that McGill suffers from is actually the very real - electromagnetic hypersensitivity though the debate is still on whether on the show, McGill is suffering from the real thing or it is merely psychosomatic!
Variety had an enriching and candid Q&A with actor Michael McKean on this issue. When he was asked whether Chuck's illness is psychosomatic or not then he replied that it is very real for the man in question but for the others it is more of a mental issue, though they can't portray it directly in a scene.
McKean spoke fondly about the chemistry between Chuck and Jimmy and said that the hospital scene in which Jimmy tries to remove all the electricity from Chuck's room illustrates the point well. He goes on to add that for the longest time Chuck has been there to support Jimmy all his life and now it is the responsibility of the other brother to do the same. When Chuck needs Jimmy now, there is no force that can keep him away from fulfilling his duties towards the elder brother.
McKean also said that on the show, Jimmy feels that he is responsible for Chuck's condition in numerous ways, as he has been a major source of stress and tension. No matter how much he tries to stay out of trouble, things just don't seem to work out for him, as per reports by BoingBoing.
