The new Korean boy band group Pentagon was asked what their goal is as performers. Hongseok, a member of the group, gave a reply that seems too ambitious for a new band.
He said it is to beat Piko-Taro’s record of more than 158 million hits on YouTube. Hongseok explained, “In the past, when you type ‘pen’ in a search engine, it automatically brings up ‘Pen Pineapple Apple Pen’, but recently, there was one time when we came up first.”
It was a one-time event since it is again PPAP which first shows up when the word “pen” is typed, Hui, another member of the boy band said. However, he acknowledged that to reach that lofty goal, they need first to go for “perfection,” Allkpop reported.
The Pentagon Korean boy band, which is under Cube Entertainment, is just a month old, having debuted on Oct. 10, 2016 through the launch of their first mini album titled “Pentagon.” The launch was held at Mnet’s M! Countdown on Oct. 13 when the boy band performed the title track Gorilla, according to Nowkpop.
The band’s members are Jin Ho, the main vocalist; Hui, lead dancer; Hongseok, lead vocal; E’Dawn, main rapper and main dancer; Shin Won, sub vocalist; Yeo One, lead vocalist; Yan An, sub vocalist; Yuto, sub rapper; Kino, main dancer and sub vocalist; and Woo Seok, lead rapper and maknae. Yuto is Japanese and Yan An is Chinese, while the rest are Koreans.
A gauge of how popular “PPAP” has become – with more than 158 million hits – is that the Japanese version of Siri on iPhones, when the words “pen pineapple apple pen” are uttered, the digital assistant would reply, “Nice! Let me try as well.”
However, its words are altered as: “I have a Suica. I have an iPhone. Mmm … Apple Pay! I have a card. I have a watch. Mmm…Apple Watch! Apple Pay… Apple Watch… Apple Watch Apple Pay!” The Verge quoted.
