Android fans rushing to get version 7.1 Nougat experience can now do so but not from Google. It's courtesy of CyanogenMOD ROM 14.1 and the fix, admittedly temporary and incomplete per the maker, is ready for the Nexus 5X and 6P, the LG G3 and G4, the Galaxy S5, the OnePlus 3 and many more.
The complete list of compatible devices is listed below:
- angler (Nexus 6P)
- bullhead (Nexus 5X)
- cancro (Xiaomi Mi3w/Mi4)
- d855 (LG G3)
- falcon/peregrine/thea/titan (Moto G variants)
- h811/h815 (LG G4)
- klte/kltedv/kltespr/klteusc/kltevzw (Samsung Galaxy S5)
- oneplus3 (OnePlus 3)
- Z00L/Z00T (Zenfone 2)
CyanogenMOD.org reported that the list soon be updated and indicated that CM14.1 nightly builds remains a work in progress so users need to anticipate bugs in the initial rollout. And while the ROM is patterned after 7.1 Nougat there will be missing features.
"It's still very early on for this release and a number of features (like Themes) aren't available yet, but development is progressing," the report said.
As such, users are advised not to report missing features as bugs but participation is wholly encouraged. Per the same report: "Now is a great time to get involved with the project too- CM is returning to its community-driven roots and there are endless ways to help out."
Incomplete and bug-ridden the ROM might be, the release of CM14.1 is a welcome development in the Android world given that it will take time for the real 7.1 Nougat to be delivered in most devices. At best, most of the flagship models are still stuck with Marshmallow and first device to make the jump to Nougat is the LG G5. And take note that the OS update only involves Nougat version 7.0.
Samsung is also not expected to chew in 7.1 Nougat real soon. The last heard from the company is the beta testing for both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and there was no solid indication on when exactly the deployment is schedule. And take note that the beta testing is for version 7.0.
Even the Nexus 2015 devices are out of luck for now. 9to5Google said that while Android 7.1 can be installed on the Nexus 5X and 6P, the build available is only for developer preview. The real deal is exclusive for now for the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones.
So CyanogenMOD 14.1 is the chance for the many Android fans, including those in the Nexus sphere, to get an early bite of 7.1 Nougat. But be advised that it's going to be a ride that is both rough and interesting.
