From one greatness to another, John McEnroe has some interesting things to say about the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer.
In an interview with Italian media outlet La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, John McEnroe spoke about the tennis player he truly admire. McEnroe, a former world No. 1 and considered as one of the greatest of all time in the sport, said that Federer is now the tennis player he admires the most.
"When he [Borg] retired at 26, it upset me," McEnroe said via Tennis World USA, referring to Bjorn Borg as a player he used to appreciate. "I missed the matches against him. While, if I had to choose a current player, how could I not mention Roger Federer?"
It is not too surprising that a legend like McEnroe has utmost respect for Federer. The Basel native is one of the most loved, appreciated and iconic athlete to ever play the sport. Federer, who holds a record 17 Grand Slam titles, has captured the hearts of many because of his approach to the game and his off-court character.
Federer's drive to be at his best has also mesmerized fans around the world. Such is evident at this point of his career as Federer attempts to recover from a knee injury and come back to the Tour stronger and in full health.
"I am completely on track," Federer told Tages Anzeiger. "The hope is that in [physical] conditional I am again 100 percent almost, like with treadmill and sprints. Now we increase the intensity, and also I will start to play tennis again."
Federer aims to return in the tennis scene next year at the Australian Open, marking his 18th straight appearance at the event.
The Swiss, who, for the first time in 14 years, now sits out of the top 10 world rankings, isn't expected to immediately pick up where he left, especially playing against the likes of world No. 1 Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. But while Federer may no longer be the frontrunner to topple top players in the sport, competing in full health next season would certainly give fans something to be delighted in 2017.
