Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship at UFC 205 with reigning welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley. In a recent interview, Woodley insisted that he will not back down from McGregor and he is open to fighting him anytime.
"If he wants the fight, we can sign it right now. I'm good on the fight. I just don't think it's a good idea for him to fight me," Woodley told MMA Fighting.
"The Chosen One" added that fighting the brash Irishman is not a win-win situation for him since he is expected to win. But if he loses, he is going to get annulated by the media and some fans for getting beat by a fighter that started at 145 pounds.
"I think it's good for media but in general I don't know how I can win. If I beat him, everyone will say I was supposed to beat him - he's a former featherweight. If I lose to him, obviously we know what's going to happen there," Woodley said.
The 34-year-old champion is coming off a draw against Stephen Thompson at the same event in New York City. He obviously thought that he won that fight but it does not matter since he retained the title but in unconvincing fashion.
It should be noted that Woodley and McGregor already had a scuffle just hours before UFC 205 in the locker room. Many believed that McGregor's plan has always been to go after the welterweight championship, assuming he will win the lightweight title, which he did.
However, McGregor's next UFC fight is on hold as he announced at the UFC 205 post-fight press conference that he will not go back inside the Octagon until he gets a stake in the company. He demanded the stake because he believes that he earned and deserved it.
The 28-year-old superstar is also expecting his first child with girlfriend Dee Devlin early next year. On the other hand, UFC President Dana White has confirmed via a FOX Sports report that Woodley will defend his welterweight title against Thompson in a rematch.
Nevertheless, McGregor is a wanted man by many fighters like Jose Aldo, Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov. He is also being courted by the WWE about a future appearance on their television show.
