YG announced that none of its artists is attending MAMA 2016, including its newest girl group BLACKPINK.
For years, YG artists give out incredible performances at the said event. In 2015, YG surprised everyone when the four members of 2NE1 appeared and performed in MAMA's stage. Moreover, YG artists are crowd favorites and draw big crowd of fans in the event.
MAMA 2016 is happening on Dec. 2 in Hong Kong. Below are the four reasons Kpop fans speculated why BLACKPINK will snub MAMA 2016.
Losing Best New Artist to IOI
While BLACKPINK is one of the hottest debuts this year, they are opposed a strong contender. Project girl group IOI. The latter debuted in May after the conclusion of Mnet's reality show Produce 101, which sieved female trainees from different entertainment agencies to get the cream of the crop.
Since their hyped debut, IOI did a lot of activities. Moreover, Mnet is the host of MAMA. It is not surprising to give the award to the product of one of its high-rating reality shows. There are rumors that BLACKPINK bagged the Best New Artist Award in Melon Awards against IOI simply because a YG director is affiliated with the staff of Melon Awards.
2NE1 disbandment
YG recently announced that 2NE1 disbanded after much thought and consideration. After seven years, YG's female group is now history. Some netizens are putting the blame on BLACKPINK as one of the factors for the disbandment. 2NE1 made a surprising appearance at last year's MAMA.
Busy schedules overseas
When YG announced that it will not attend the MAMA 2016, it cited busy schedules overseas to further the careers of its artists. Moreover, the label is reportedly busy with the upcoming comebacks of some of its biggest stars - Sechs Kies, BIGBANG, and PSY.
YG keeping a low profile
However, most Kpop fans think that the main reason why YG Entertainment will skip MAMA 2016 is because it needs to keep a low profile for now because the agency is being linked to the controversial scandal involving the president of South Korea.
Rumor has it that a YG director is affiliated with President Park and the cult leader. This could be the reason why YG gets priority in major events. Moreover, the label is able to bury its past scandals like G-Dragon's marijuana use and Daesung's car accident scandal.
