"Moana" topped the Black Friday box office race with earnings of more than $20 million. The Disney animation movie even bested J.K. Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," as well as the superhero film "Doctor Strange."
Disney's latest animation movie "Moana" reached impressive box office numbers on Nov. 24, the Black Friday holiday. Released in more than 3,000 movie theaters around the U.S., the film posted the highest domestic earnings during the said holiday with $21.8 million, according to Variety.
Meanwhile, the "Harry Potter" author's new film nabbed the second spot in the Black Friday box office race with earnings of $18.6 million. Coming in at third place is the superhero film "Doctor Strange" with $5.5 million.
With estimated domestic earnings of over $80 million during the Thanksgiving week, "Moana" also bested competitors "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and the Marvel movie "Doctor Strange." The two films posted domestic box office earnings of $65 million and $14 million, respectively, during the said period.
Other movies that showed strong box office numbers during the Black Friday holiday included Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard's film "Allied" with earnings of $4.9 million. "Arrival" earned $4.5 million, while "Bad Santa 2" reached box office numbers of $2.3 million.
In other news, Disney's "Moana" ended the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with earnings of more than $47 million, according to Forbes. With an additional earning of $26 million from Black Friday, the film's box office numbers increased 120 percent.
Despite the jump in numbers, the percentage is lower as compared to other animated films such as the hit "Frozen," "Tangled" and "The Good Dinosaur," as indicated in the same report. "Frozen" posted a Thanksgiving weekend bump of 147 percent, while the other two films registered increases of 142 percent and 137 percent, respectively.
