UFC light heavyweight title contender Anthony Johnson wants nothing but the best for UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier despite losing an immediate shot at the belt in their supposed UFC 206 title bout after Cormier withdrew from the fight because of an injury.
Cormier and Johnson are scheduled to dispute for the UFC light heavyweight title as the main event of the UFC 206 on Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Center in Canada before the champ was forced to withdraw from fighting because of an undisclosed injury, MMA Fighting reported.
Johnson, who would have to wait for months before getting a crack at the title, tweeted he wishes for the full recovery of his rival. Cormier told Johnson through Twitter that they will still "get to rock and roll" and apologized for what happened.
With what happened, Cormier would end 2016 without defending his title as he also pulled out from his UFC 197 rematch against Jon "Bones" Jones because of an injury. The two were scheduled to meet again in the Octagon in UFC 200 before Jones failed his USADA drug test the week of the bout. Anderson Silva, who replaced Jones for a three-round non-title bout, surrendered a unanimous decision to Cormier.
Johnson, meanwhile, who was defeated by Cormier for the vacant light heavyweight belt in UFC 187, bounced back magnificently and registered three straight knockout wins over Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira.
The UFC is still looking for a replacement for Cormier while the co-main event of UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway will headline UFC's penultimate pay-per-view of 2016. UFC 206 recently lost the Rashard Evans and Tim Kennedy fight after the Ontario Commission chose not to license Evans' medical issue, SB Nation's Bloody Elbow reported.
Donald Cerone will also see action in UFC 206 against Matt Brown in the welterweight division while Kennedy will face Kevin Gastelum in replacement for Evans.
