Australian actress Margot Robbie is set to star in Wong Kar-wai-directed movie about the murder of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of Gucci fashion house founder Guccio Gucci. The movie is slated to be Wong's directorial return following the release of his critically acclaimed film "The Grandmaster" in 2013.
The story centers on the murder of Maurizio, who was gunned down in the foyer of his office. The suspect was the victim's ex-wife, Patricia Reggiani, who hired a hitman to kill Maurizio. Before his death, the former sold his stocks in the fashion company for $170 million. Maurizio and Reggiani later separated, but Reggiani could not accept it so he threatened to kill him.
Reggiani was convicted for Maurizio's murder and was sent to 26 years in prison. She earned the nickname "The Black Widow." She declined to apply for parole, saying "Ive never worked in my life and I'm certainly not going to start now."
According to The Film Stage, the movie about Maurizio's murder was supposed to be directed by Ridley Scott, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie in leading roles. The role of Reggiani was later attached to Penelope Cruz; however, rumor has it that Robbie is in the running to play the role.
The movie is said to be in the early stages, with Andrea Berloff and Charless Randolph each working on drafts of the script, The Guardian reported. Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures is producing the film.
Director Wong Kar-Wai is known for his keen eye for visual detail and moving narratives, making the Gucci murder story another exciting visual feast.
In related news, another renowned fashion designer will have her story retold through the lenses. Lady Gaga is set to portray Donatella Versace in "American Crime Story" Season 3, which revolves around the murder of Donatella's brother, Gianni Versace, in 1997.
Gianni was gunned down outside his Miami Beach mansion in July 1997 by a serial killer later identified as Andrew Cunanan. The killer committed suicide eight days later using the same gun that killed Gianni. The motive for Cunanan killing Gianni remains unclear.
"American Crime Story" Season 1, which was about the murder trial against O.J. Simpson, won nine Primetime Emmys.
