PlayStation 4 sold over two million units thanks to Black Friday discounts.
With Black Friday over and done this year, the figures from the sales have started coming in. According to an initial estimate, Sony is rumored to have sold about two million PlayStation 4 units in the span of a week. However, these numbers have not been confirmed officially.
The two million sales figure, caught the eye of industry analysts when Sunny Sanghera an Ubisoft Events Specialist posted it on his Twitter account. Pointing to the Tweet, which read "over two million" units WCCFTech stated that is was likely that Sony would sell more units by the time Cyber Monday is over.
Interestingly, after the tweet from Sanghera was reported, it was removed from his Twitter timeline. This could indicate that Sony is not ready to reveal the PS4 sales that happened around Black Friday and could be waiting for the Cyber Monday numbers to come in to make an official announcement.
Sanghera also implied in his tweet that the "Watch Dogs 2" promotion that was offered along with the PS4 played a part in the huge sales of the console. However, Sony has two new PS4 offerings in the market this year in the form of the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro. These two new consoles are expected to boost sales and so the "two million" figure could be genuine.
Gaming consoles are some of the most sought after holiday purchases during the Black Friday period and their sales surge every year due to discounts and bundles offered. The PlayStation 4 Slim was still being bundled with a free "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition" for Cyber Monday. While the premium PS4 Pro is being offered with a bonus game which is rare Forbes reported.
Therefore, it is likely that customers took advantage of these discounts till they ended and Sony might not have all the information to release an official estimate. In the meanwhile, Sony's main rival in the gaming console space Microsoft has stated that its Xbox One console has also been selling well. Analysts are, therefore, eagerly awaiting official sales figures from both companies to make comparisons.
