The Boston Celtics are reportedly still poised to make big deals, but if they miss out on opportunities to acquire bigger fishes in the trade market, Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Nick Young could be a viable option.
The Celtics could be on the frontline of any potential blockbusters deal before the February deadline, with the team having plenty of tradable assets at their disposal. Since adding Al Horford this past summer, Boston has been looking to fish another star to speed up the process of returning to title contention.
However, if things do not pan out the way the Celtics are expecting, they could certainly settle for second-tier players available on the trading block. According to SB Nation's Celtics Blog, among those the Celtics could consider is Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Nick Young.
"There's also this idea I floated out in August about getting Nick Young. He's been on fire for the Lakers and become a reliable defender. The price might be higher now than it was this summer, but LA is in full rebuild mode."
Young's career has been rejuvenated playing under Luke Walton's schemes. The 31-year-old shooting guard is becoming one of the Lakers' consistent players, averaging 14.1 points a game, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 41.8 from beyond the arc.
Looking at the Celtics' roster, the team's only reliable three-point threat is Avery Bradley, who is shooting 40.9 percent from the three-point area on 5.2 attempts per game. Bringing in Young would give the Celtics an outside threat, who would allow more floor spacing for Horford.
After being touted as the likely expendable piece on the Lakers' roster until before the season starts, there is a growing sense Los Angeles may hold on to Young, whose trade value has increased early in the season. Young's trade value has increased, which means any potential deal for the Celtics would require giving up a young talent and a future draft pick.
Whether the Celtics would truly consider Young remains to be seen, but it could be a possibility if the team misses out on stars before the deadline.
