Basketball fans now have something to watch in Netflix after the entertainment company acquired exclusive streaming rights of the documentary "One in a Billion" about Satnam Singh Bhamara, the first Indian-born player to be drafted in the NBA.
From the name of the documentary itself, Singh, who was drafted as the 52nd overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA Draft, is the first Indian-born NBA player out of the billion population in India. Aside from Singh, Canadian Sim Bhullar became the first player with Indian descent to actually play in the NBA after suiting up for the Sacramento Kings.
The feature-length documentary will debut on Netflix on Dec. 6, as reported by Variety, and it will include appearances from NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Sacramento Kings Vivek Ranadivé and NBA's senior director of international basketball operations Troy Justice.
"One in a Billion" follows the life of the 7-foot-2 from his home in Ballo Ke in India to draft night in New York City where he made history.
Currently, Singh plays for the Texas Legends in the NBA Developmental League. Singh also played for the Indian national team in the 2011 and 2013 FIBA Asia Championships.
RGTV has the photos from the documentary, including Singh's first basketball hoop which was made by his father. In 2010, the behemoth received a basketball scholarship from the International Management Group Reliance's basketball academy, transferring from his homeland to Bradenton, Florida.
Singh did not know any English at that time. He averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks for IMG in the 2014-2015 season. Because of his deficiency in the English language required to have the necessary grades to play in the NCAA, he never received any scholarship from colleges and universities.
Do not forget to book Dec. 10 and watch Satnam Singh go from simple village boy to the first in the billion Indians to step foot in the most famous basketball league in the world.
