The midseason finale for "The Flash" Season 3 revealed the nature and backstory of the villain Savitar but it also hinted that Iris West (Candice Patton) may be killed before the season is over. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg now indicates her fate will become the main focus of the season's second half.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kreisberg teased that this plot point creates a problem Barry (Grant Gustin) and the rest of Team Flash were not anticipating. It was a problem they have not yet faced before.
"It's so big, we're actually considering changing the saga sell from talking about 'Flashpoint' to talking about that, because that's really what's driving the episodes for the rest of the season, actually," Kreisberg stated. "'Flashpoint' won't loom as large as the challenge that presents itself in Episode 309."
During the first half of the season the show focused primarily on Barry's attempt to fix the timeline after he created and destroyed the "Flashpoint" reality. Alchemy (Tom Felton) had been a primary antagonist, granting people their powers after they lost these abilities with the new shift in time and reality.
Moving forward, the show will focus on the battle against Savitar and Barry's attempt to prevent Iris West from getting killed. The show is wrapping up production in several months and E! Online reported that Season 3 will likely deal with Iris' fate during the season finale.
This does not directly mean "Flashpoint" will not be referenced or that it will not create further troubles for the heroes.
Iris' fate has become a major plot point in the show since Season 1 given how her future with Barry was an important plot point revolving around Reverse-Flash's actions. While the possible future sees Savitar murder her, the show has also shown Barry and Team Flash change events and create their own future.
"The Flash" Season 3 is in its midseason break and will return in 2017.
