Many games were released this year so it is only fitting that a list be made of which ones turned out to be a resounding success. For those who plan to get the best games of 2016 in time for the holidays, here are some that will keep them glued for hours, whether they are using their video game consoles, Windows PCs, or mobile and portable devices. 

PlayStation 4

"Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" was proclaimed by Metacritic as the top choice of PlayStation 4 fans. Based on aggregated reviews of the game, it garnered a total of 93 out of 100 points. Developed by Naughty Dog, the fourth title in the "Uncharted" series puts players in the shoes of Nathan Drake as he travels the world to find ancient artifacts. Similar to the "Indiana Jones" films, one also needs to solve simple yet exciting environmental puzzles and shoot the bad guys.

On its heels is CD Projekt Red's "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine," which gained a score of 91. It is the second and final expansion pack for the 2015 action role-playing game. Players need to hack and slash every beast they find in Toussaint. They can actively enjoy the three combat styles that Geralt, the protagonist, can use in the game in different situations. It is the only game that offers such feature.

Xbox One

"Inside" is a puzzle-platformer adventure game developed by Playdead and was released in June. The game can be considered dark in nature and very far from the heavy action and loud games that are normally liked by gamers. However, the challenges -- such as escaping from zombie-like creatures, using animals and farm equipment to create diversions and using mind-control over the abundant lifeless bodies to solve the puzzles -- have hooked many fans to the Xbox One and gave it a score rating of 92.

"Overwatch" from Blizzard Entertainment has kept Microsoft console fans busy for hours and hours. It is a multiplayer first-person shooter game in which all six players in a team work together to secure and defend control points against the other team. Players are hooked with its four different characters, several gameplay modes and map types that are inspired by real places like London, Japan, Greece and Ancient Egypt.

Windows PC

Many Windows PC players are fascinated by "Firewatch's" high graphics details as they get to watch out for virtual forest fires in the Wyoming area. The indie game developed by Campo Santo puts gamers in the shoes of Henry, a Shoshone National Forest fire lookout. They get to investigate mysterious anomalies happening in the forest. Another intriguing aspect of the game is the interaction between Henry and her supervisor Delilah, who only communicates via a walkie-talkie. Dialog options are presented to the players upon the use of the device and their response greatly affects their relationship, reported by The Guardian. Metacritic gave a score of 81 for the game. 

Other notable games for the PC includes "Dark Souls III," "Sid Meier's Civilization VI," "Owlboy," "Overwatch," and "Battlefield 1."

As for portable devices: "Pokémon Sun", "Pokémon Moon" and "Picross 3D: Round 2" are considered the top choices for the Nintendo 3DS, while "Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma" and "XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus" are for the PlayStation Vita. Many iOS and Android device owners enjoy playing "Pokémon GO" for hours.
