The tvN drama "Goblin" has captured the interest of many fans since it premiered in early December. However, one of the reasons behind the said production's rising popularity may be due to the explosive on-screen chemistry between its two lead actors Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook.
Gong portrays the titular role of the goblin Kim Shin. Cursed to live an immortal life, he embarks on a journey to search for a goblin bride who will end his suffering. Meanwhile, Lee plays the grim reaper Wang Yeo who has no knowledge of his past.
The two immortal characters meet and end up living together after a deal made by the goblin's custodian rented out Shin's home to Yeo. Funny and interesting interactions then ensue that eventually brought the goblin and the grim reaper closer together.
With the great on-screen chemistry between Gong and Lee, many viewers fell in love with the bromance between the said actors' characters. Shin and Yeo's conversations together mixed with moments that showed the two characters' animosity to each other only served to increase the viewers' interest in the tvN production.
There were also scenes that featured the goblin and grim reaper's growing closeness and friendship. Scenarios that depicted them as brothers where Shin would sometimes consult Yeo, as well as interactions where the two would engage in sibling spats, added a different depth to "Goblin."
"Goblin" even became the most discussed TV drama on various social media platforms during its debut weekend. The tvN series was mentioned 21,623 times and 40,737 times on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3, respectively, according to Daumsoft's data, as cited by Yonhap News.
Gong and Lee's drama also became the highest ranking TV series on the Content Power Index during its premiere week. The tvN series posted a score of 7,499 points on CJ E&M's TV popularity chart, as cited by Kpop Herald.
