Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya is exploring the possibility of All-Mexican brawl between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, according to Los Angeles Times boxing writer Lance Pugmire.
Pugmire was told by Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions that they are very interested in booking a fight between two widely popular Mexican middleweights in May.
Chavez Jr. made his triumphant return to the ring at 168 pounds by scoring a unanimous decision win over Germany's Dominik Britsch in Monterrey, Mexico. Alvarez is still recovering from a hand injury, though he'll be ready for the second quarter of 2017.
Lance Pugmire of LA Times via Boxing247:
"We've been talking, it's a real possibility and we hope we can get it done," Gomez said. "There's interest on both sides. I know it'll be an explosive fight. As a Mexican American, I'm proud because it's the two biggest names in Mexico - the two best fighters from Mexico at the moment - and whenever the two top Mexicans fight each other, it's a huge event."
Meanwhile, De La Hoya served as a guest on ESPN show First Take with Max Kellerman and Stephen A. Smith. There, he cleared that they are no ducking Gennady Golovkin because they are very interested for the fight with Canelo to happen next year at full-fledged 160-pounds.
De La Hoya on First Take:
"Canelo truly is a '54-pounder. I mean, he is," De La Hoya said. "He can make the weight no problem, and Canelo and I and the team have that for 2017 he will move up to middleweight, full-fledged middleweight, and fight the middleweight champions of the world, and that's including Triple-G. At 160, that's it. You have my word, and Canelo is not afraid of Triple-G. September, we're hoping he signs the contract and it will happen."
Triple-G will be making his title defense against Danny Jacobs. Only after that fight, they can start negotiating for a showdown between Triple G and Canelo.
