The recent NBA trade rumors have the Boston Celtics getting a new target for a big man, possibly the best complement to Al Horford.
According to a claim from iSports Times, the rumors of Hassan Whiteside going to the Celtics has been picking up. The primary basis for this proposal is that the Boston Celtics have not lived up to the high expectations and it's primarily because of rebounding.
The Fansided Celtics blog Hardwood Houdini already suggested that the Celtics make trades for a big man. The listed targets were Alex Len, Kris Humphries and Richaun Holmes. However, they are secondary players and the Celtics have prepared themselves for a blockbuster trade.
The target has always been DeMarcus Cousins but the latest word from the Sacramento Kings corner (as opposed to sources "around the league") is that owner Vivek Ranadive strongly opposes any move to trade their star center.
There are also pundits who state that it's better for the Celtics to pursue a center who concentrates on defense and rebounding. Nerlens Noel of the Philadelphia 76ers has long been rumored for the Celtics but because of injury and now publicized "attitude problems" Ainge may have to pass.
According to a report from Philadelphia CBS, the Sixers are likely to get meager returns for Noel and may decide not to trade him at this time and hold out until his value improves.
The trade that could really move the needle for Boston is acquiring Whiteside. A true beast on the defensive end, he could stick to his forte if he joins the Celtics, leaving the offense to Al Horford, Isaiah Thomas and company.
The Heat is challenged offensively and they may need to start over after the departure of the entire Big Three. The recent CBA settlement may make it difficult for the Heat to pry away franchise big men like Blake Griffin in the free agent market.
Their best shot at a rebuild is acquiring a top draft pick-like the Brooklyn Nets' pick swap in 2017 and unprotected first round in 2018. They could also ask for Jaylen Brown, the 3rd overall pick this year.
There are still many scenarios that could play out. Danny Ainge and Pat Riley aren't exactly the best of friends and that could be a challenge. But if Riley wants to rebuild and decide that Whiteside cannot be his franchise player, the Boston Celtics have the best package to offer in exchange.
