Fans of the iconic "Archie" comics have been looking forward to the graphic novel's TV adaptation "Riverdale." However, the upcoming CW show is vastly different from its original source, according to Luke Perry.
"Riverdale" will give avid fans of the "Archie" comic books the chance to see their favorite characters on the small screens in a live-action TV drama. Viewers will soon see the love triangle between the titular teen Archie (K.J. Apa), the girl-next-door Betty (Lili Reinhart) and the young heiress Veronica (Camila Mendes).
However, the upcoming CW series tells a darker tale of the three characters and other Riverdale residents. The recently released promo clip for the "Archie" reboot, posted on Collider, featured a look at a clandestine affair between the school's music teacher Ms. Gundry (Sarah Habel) and Archie, a student's brutal murder and secrets that may soon haunt beloved characters.
As the community mourns the death of the student, it appears that Archie will be manipulated in keeping a big secret that may be linked to the murder case. However, a scene in the said clip showed Archie's inner dilemma as his father Fred (Luke Perry) offers him valuable advice on how to deal with the situation. Fred told Archie in the clip, "The choices you're making right now do have consequences."
Forced to play along and protect someone close to the titular character, Archie will begin to question himself, his motives and other Riverdale residents. Archie stated in a voice-over featured in the said teaser clip, "I'm doubting everything about myself... about Riverdale."
It is still unclear if one of Archie's friends may be involved in the murder case. Similar to other suspense drama series, viewers can expect to learn the identity of the killer towards the end of the CW series.
Meanwhile, Perry commented on how different "Riverdale" is from the famed "Archie" comic books during an interview with TVLine. He highlighted the CW series' diverse take on the classic graphic novels where the character update now mirrored how teens think and act in this day and age, as compared to the "Archie" comic's dated genre.
"Riverdale" will premiere on Jan. 26, 2017 on the CW. Watch a trailer below:
