The Royal Rumble is the one night huge WWE superstars like The Big Show or Mark Henry is a threat to win. However, they have never won a Rumble Match but it's all about to change next year. Braun Strowman, who is touted as the next Big Show, is a legitimate threat to win the 2017 Royal Rumble Match.
In the 30-year history of the Royal Rumble, there were only three "true giants" that have won the match: The Undertaker, Big John Studd and Yokozuna. Nevertheless, the year 2017 is the year when another one of those giants wins a Rumble Match.
According to Blake Oestriecher of Forbes, the WWE might be heading towards an unlikely title match at WrestleMania 33. It will be Strowman challenging for the WWE Universal Championship held by Roman Reigns.
"The scenario is simple: Reigns beats Owens for the Universal Championship, then Strowman wins the Royal Rumble and challenges Reigns for the title at WrestleMania 33. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object. Hey, it could happen," Oestriecher wrote.
As seen this past week on Monday Night Raw, Kevin Owens will defend the Universal title against Reigns the Royal Rumble. Also, Strowman attacked both Reigns and Seth Rollins in the main which might be WWE's way of testing the waters for the big man's push.
Ever since making his debut on the main roster last year, Strowman has never been pinned. He is one of the most protected superstars as he is one of Vince McMahon's favorites. He is the typical McMahon beast that gets pushed at the top.
But unlike other failed big men, Strowman has the potential to be a big star. He is very athletic for his size and he has a great off-cam personality. At this time and age of social media, his appearances on podcasts have helped him established his popularity among the diehard wrestling fans.
Oestriecher is not the only one who thinks Strowman is on his way to winning the Royal Rumble Match. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer (subscription required) noted in the latest episode of his radio show that Strowman is the likely Rumble winner.
"If Roman Reigns wins the Universal Championship, it's possible that Braun Strowman will win the Royal Rumble. Yeah, it is possible," Meltzer said.
