The upcoming "Justice League" movie will be featuring Ciaran Hinds as the main villain Steppenwolf but other villains will be appearing as well. One returning villain is Lex Luthor, who will again be played by Jesse Eisenberg.
In a press kit obtained by Comic Book, Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed Eisenberg's return. The press kit contained both the cast list and the synopsis for the film.
Eisenberg last appeared as the starring villain in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in which Luthor manipulated events to get Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman (Ben Affleck) to fight each other. The movie ended with Luthor defeated and locked up in the Belle Reve prison.
Eisenberg's portrayal of the classic villain was met with mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. It is noted that Eisenberg's return is an indication that Warner Bros. Pictures were satisfied with his spin on the character.
It was revealed in "Batman v Superman" that Luthor was aware Steppenwolf and the rest of Darkseid's forces were coming to invade Earth. By the end of the movie Luthor was taken to the Belle Reve prison where he informs Batman that the "bells can't be unrung" and that the invasion cannot be stopped.
The villain Darkseid was previously speculated to be the main villain in "Justice League" given that his technological devices can be seen in "Batman v Superman." Steppenwolf is often depicted as a general working for Darkseid, indicating Steppenwolf and Luthor's alliance is merely preparation for Darkseid's arrival.
Only Luthor knows what it is coming to Earth, according to Cinema Blend. This indicates that the hereos may approach Luthor in the film to interrogate him and extract more information about their enemy.
Luthor is not the only DC character returning in "Justice League." Connie Nielson will also be reprising her role as Hippolyta, the mother of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot).
Hippolyta will debut in next year's "Wonder Woman" movie before appearing in "Justice League." It is still uncertain if Hippolyta will survive the events of "Wonder Woman." If she does not then her appearance in "Justice League" may be isolated to flashbacks.
"Wonder Woman" will be released on June 2, 2017 while the "Justice League" film is scheduled to be released on Nov. 17, 2017. The official Comic-Con trailer for "Justice League" can be viewed below:
